Cody Overton captured his second Southern Nationals win in three days.
What won the race: Inheriting control after his turn-four slide job made contact with race-long leader Wil Herrington and runner-up Zack Mitchell, sending them spinning on the 29th lap, third-starting Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., led the final 11 laps of Saturday's Schaeffer's Southern Nationals feature at Cochran Motor Speedway. Overton was unchallenged after the lap-30 restart and beat Dalton Cook by 0.651 of a second for the $7,553 payday, his second Southern Nationals win in the last three days.
Quotable: "(Those booing from the Cochran stands) were never really fans anyways, nobody liked me," Overton said. "I felt like I cleared (Wil Herrington), I mean, he’s got a brake pedal, too. I get it, we’re all racing for the same deal, I hate it for him. I mean, he could’ve let off (the gas) too. It is what it is, I just appreciate everybody cheering me on."
Key notes: Wil Herrington led largely unchallenged for the opening 28 laps until Cody Overton tried a bold third-to-first slide job in turns three and four after a lap-29 restart; Overton narrowly cleared Zack Mitchell for second before his right rear quarterpanel ended up on Herrington's left-front nosepiece as the two drivers made contact at the flagstand when Herrington spun into the inside frontstretch wall, collecting Mitchell as well. ... Herrington got out of his car and expressed obvious frustration with Overton, sticking his head inside Overton's driver-side window for a quick chat before appearing to throw a small item at Overton's car; Mitchell was forced to tag the field and could only rally to finish seventh. ... Overton led the final 11 laps for his second career Southern Nationals victory, adding to his $7,542 triumph in Thursday's Ken Knight Memorial at Modoc (S.C.) Speedway. ... It was his sixth overall feature win this season and second in Super Late Model action. ... Dalton Cook marched steadily through the field from his 12th starting spot, moving from eighth on lap 22 to fourth by lap 25, before inheriting the runner-up spot on the lap-30 restart. ... Fourth-finishing Joseph Joiner slipped by Garrett Smith after Smith's left-front nose made contact with the inside wall in turn three on the late restart, sending Smith backsliding to sixth. ... Jake Knowles ran as high as fourth in the early going before fading to finish 10th, the final starter to complete 40 laps. ... Besides the lap-30 melee that eliminated Herrington, the race was slowed one other time when Landen Zakalowski retired after spinning at the entrance of turn one on the 29th lap. ... Saturday's race was moved to Cochran after rain spoiled Screven Motor Speedway's annual Rebel Yell event; the feature lasted 22 minutes with 16 starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Runner-up Dalton Cook of Smiths Station, Ala., started 12th.
