Dustin Sorensen (19) powers around Ashley Anderson (81) for the lead.
What won the race: Powering back around Ashley Anderson as they banged doors at the completion of the 52nd lap, 17th-starting Dustin Sorensen of Rochester, Minn., led the final four laps of Saturday's 10th annual Duane Mahder Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway. Sorensen led 13 of the final 19 laps and beat Anderson by 0.671 of a second for the $10,555 payday, his second career Late Model victory at Cedar Lake.
Quotable: "I kept picking cars off there on the bottom and I didn’t really want to go to the top. Then a couple guys were maintaining (position) up top there, so I figured I’d try it and it worked really good there in (turns) one and two, for sure, kinda had to flow three and four," Sorensen said. "That was a blast, I’m wore out. I probably wouldn’t have won it, but I was a little pissed off there at the end, trying to wreck my car in one and two, but I guess it worked."
Key notes: Sorensen stuck primarily to the high line and led 13 of the final 19 laps (37-45, 52-55) for his first win since June 14, 2024's Masters prelim at Cedar Lake, also in a Limited Late Model. ... Sorensen won his first special since a Dirt Kings Tour sweep on June 7-8, 2024, at Iowa's Winneshiek Raceway. ... Tenth-starting Ashley Anderson came alive after the lap-31 fuel stop and slipped by Sorensen to lead laps 46-51 before Sorensen powered back around at the completion of lap 52. ... Polesitter Pat Doar led all but three of the race's opening 35 laps (1-21, 24, 26-35) before giving way to Jesse Glenz and slipping to finish sixth. ... Glenz led three times for four laps (22-23, 25, 36) before settling for third. ... In all, there were eight lead changes among Doar, Glenz, Sorensen and Anderson. ... A.J. Diemel improved 12 positions and rounded out the top 10. ... The event honored Duane Mahder, longtime racer and Red Cedar Speedway legend who died in a work-related accident in Nov. of 2016 at the age of 64; Mahder was the 2001 WISSOTA Challenge Series champion and a seven-time WCS feature winner. Duane’s son, Chad Mahder, improved 18 positions to finish ninth. ... Besides the 10-minute red flag for a planned fuel stop after lap 30, the race was slowed one other time when Gavin Tarras and Steve Laursen tangled for a turn-two spin on the ninth lap. ... The 55-lapper lasted 30 minutes with 23 starters running at the finish.
On the move: Chad Mahder of Eau Claire, Wis., started 27th and finished ninth.
