HARLAN, Iowa — After scoring 51 victories on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series over the past three seasons, Ricky Thornton Jr.’s 2026 was limping along with three victories on the national tour totaling a relatively modest $35,000.
Looking for something to get it back on track, the Arizona native turned Iowa resident found it in the Hawkeye State on Saturday with a flag-to-flag victory at Shelby County Speedway in the Al Belt Custom Homes Silver Dollar Nationals paying $52,000, his richest victory since last September’s World 100.
The pole-starting Thornton was never seriously challenged over 80 laps at the 3/8-mile oval in taking the checkers ahead of ninth-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., and Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., who ran second for 70 laps.
"I mean, hats off to everyone at Kohler Motorsports,” the 35-year-old Thornton said in victory lane. “I feel like it's a little sigh of relief. Feel like we got our old self back.”
Thornton had a 0.697 of a second margin at the checkers on Davenport, whose consolation prize paid a whopping $53,000 in the quirky purse with his fourth-to-second move after the race’s lone restart on lap 71. Pierce settled for third in Shelby County’s debut while Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., and Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill. — Thursday’s $15,000 prelim winner — rounded out the top five.
Track conditions surprised competitors expecting to run the high side, at least early in the feature, but the low groove tended to be the fastest way around all race long. That left Thornton to make difficult decisions of whether to overtake slower cars on the outside.
“We got to those lapped cars and I'm like, man, I really wanna move out and blow, try to blow by them,” said Thornton, adding that he tried to judge which lane was faster by watching side-by-side running competitors in front of him. Eventually, he decided he better “just keep rolling around the bottom” in keeping Pierce in check.
"I just try to do my best in lapped traffic, not gonna put myself in a really bad spot. The one time I did try to the top, I hit the curb just barely wrong,” Thornton said. “I got tight, and I'm like, man, I looked over and I saw two red cars, and I'm like, well, I think one's (the slower car of Daniel) Hilsabeck and the other one's probably Pierce, so I need to make sure I get back to the bottom and not really give the race up.”
Davenport, who quickly gained ground to reach the third position after seven laps, chased the frontrunners but never got in the mix up front. Restarting fourth after the race’s lone caution for debris on lap 71, the driver that’s not running for Lucas Oil points plotted a move in the middle lane that paid off when he overtook Shirley and Pierce.
Alas, while Davenport’s run looked like it might be strong enough to catch Thornton, he couldn’t sustain the charge beyond few laps.
“There was just enough grip there to let my right front steer,” he said. “And then, after that went away, I really couldn't do any more with it.”
Lured to the event because the odd purse gave him “two shots at a big paycheck,” Davenport joked that the extra $1,000 he got more than would “pay for that plane ticket home.”
Davenport, the three-time Lucas Oil Series champ running an independent schedule this season, also made light of his 2026 efforts in thanking his crew.
“Just happy for my guys not quitting on me, you know?” the Double L Motorsports driver said. “I may be getting old and being a part-timer nowadays, but I can still get it done every now and then.”
Pierce was bummed to lose the lucrative second spot to Davenport late, but he admitted Thornton was the class of the field.
“He was driving a heck of a race and getting through lapped traffic good, and I didn't have anything for him,” Pierce said. “We thought the top was gonna be fast for a really long time and when we dropped the green, the bottom was the best spot and the top kind of just turned to crumbs, so it took a lot of us by surprise. I think everyone thought the track was dialed in.
“That's dirt track racing sometimes you don't know what it's gonna do and a lot of times when it's 90 degrees outside like this, it brings moisture back when you till it up and tonight it just happened not to.”
