6:20 p.m. | Richards, Lanigan separated by six points going into finale

After the first round of the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, the 22-point lead that Josh Richards enjoyed over Darrell Lanigan going into the World of Outlaws final two races has lessened considerably. While Richards finished back in the 12th position, Lanigan finished fourth, cutting Richard’s lead to a mere six points going into the series finale Saturday night.

On a black racetrack in the middle of the day, Richards said it was tire choice that made the difference in the first feature.

“We would have liked to have run better to get some (points),” Richards said Saturday afternoon before the night portion of the World Finals got started. “Darrell gained a lot of points on us. He gambled on tires. It could have went either way. I felt like before the race that we were going to be good. His tires let him get up through there on the starts and get some track position. That was the key in the first race.”

But even with the performance, Richards still has the upper hand going into Saturday night.

“Now we just got to race hard. It’s crazy to race this long and it comes down to three positions between two cars,” said Richards who starts fourth in his heat Saturday night. “We were just a little bit off on tires in that feature and it cost us some positions I think. Just have to see what the tracks going to do tonight and just try to get up through there and try to win the race.”

Set to start seventh in his second-round heat race, Lanigan still has a long way to go to overtake Richards.

“We just need a little luck,” Lanigan said. “We’ve got another bad qualifying round, but hopefully it turns out like it did (today) and we’ll be all right. It depends on what they do to the track out there. We’re back in the sixth heat so that should help us some on passing.

5:40 p.m. | Round two starting soon

Opening ceremonies for round two of the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte have been completed. Speedway crews are finishing up track preparations and the racing action should begin soon. The twice-postponed round one feature for the sprint cars will kick off the night's activities followed by modified consolation races and sprint car heat races. Late Model heat races will follow the sprint cars.

4 p.m. | Davenport captures opener

Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., continued his dominance of the World of Outlaws World Finals by claiming victory in the first of two features Saturday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. After starting from the sixth position, Davenport passed Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., on lap 11 and led the remainder of the 40-lap race for his first World of Outlaws Late Model Series victory.

“This is awesome. The stands are packed and it’s really cool to get my first (World of Outlaws) win like this,” said Davenport, who has had a breakout season in 2010.

Tire choice helped propel Davenport to the victory. Preparing to race on a racetrack that caused flat right-rear tires for 25 of 28 drivers in the modified feature that preceded the Late Model race, Davenport went with Hoosier compound 70, one of the hardest tires available to Late Model drivers.

“We knew what we were going to put one early in the day,” Davenport said of his decision. “I don’t know why nobody else didn’t. I really don’t understand their thinking. I was a little bit worried. I just didn’t know if my tires would fire as good as they did. But once we got out on the racetrack and I was able to warm the tires up I knew we would be OK.”

After McCreadie had a flat right-rear tire with three laps remaining Rick Eckert of York, Pa., claimed the runner-up finish ahead of Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., in third. Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis., finished fourth with Dennis Erb Jr., of Carperntersville, Ill., fifth. World of Outlaws points leader Josh Richards finished 12th and will take a six-point lead over Lanigan into tonight's World of Outlaws finale.

With a pole heat race starting position, Davenport has the opportunity to become the first driver to sweep the World Finals by winning round two Saturday night. With the way he’s ran all weekend at Charlotte, Davenport is confident going into the event.

“I feel real good,” Davenport said. “Our car’s been really neutral. We haven’t really changed anything from the way we qualified Thursday night. I think we have as good of an opportunity tonight as we did today. We’ve had a great season so far and (to win both races) would really top it off.”

World Finals round one feature:
(1) Jonathan Davenport, (2) Rick Eckert, (3) Steve Francis, (4) Darrell Lanigan, (5) Dan Schlieper, (6) Dennis Erb Jr., (7) Clint Smith, (8) Jimmy Owens, (9) John Blankenship, (10) Scott Bloomquist, (11) Chris Madden, (12) Josh Richards, (13) Jared Landers, (14) Vic Coffey, (15) Tim Fuller, (16) Jeep Van Wormer, (17) Russ King, (18) Austin Hubbard, (19) Zack Dohm, (20) Johnny Pursley, (21) Gregg Satterlee, (22) Chris Brown, (23) Tim McCreadie, (24) Steve Shaver, (25) Chub Frank, (26) Shane Clanton, (27) Dale McDowell,(28) Jeff Rine.

3:55 p.m. | Flat right-rear for McCreadie

McCreadie has become the first driver to suffer from flat right-rear tire, bringing out the caution with three laps remaining. Eckert will assume the second position for the restart. Steve Francis is thrid with Lanigan fourth and Dan Schlieper fifth. Josh Richards is 12th.

3:39 p.m. | Davenport to second

Shane Clanton slowed in turn four bringing out the first caution of the race on lap 9. After starting sixth, Davenport moved around Eckert for the second position on lap six and closed the gap on McCreadie before the yellow flag waved.

3:35 p.m. | Late Model feature underway

The green flag has waved on the 40-lap World of Outlaws Late Model feature. Tim McCreadie has jumped to the early lead over Rick Eckert. Jonathan Davenport has moved from sixth to third.

3:30 p.m. | Tires plague modified feature

After 25 of 28 starters had right rear flats, Jimmy Phelps won the big-block modified feature. Matt Sheppard led the majority of the race until his right-rear went flat coming to the white flag. As the Late Model feature takes the track, drivers have to be worried about how their tires will hold up on the black racing surface.

3:15 p.m. | Tire concerns

The racetrack has been brutal on right-rear tires for the big-block modifieds. At lap 20 of their 30-lap feature, 15 drivers have suffered right-rear flats. There have also been nine cautions so far.

3:03 p.m. | Provisional starters

Shane Clanton and Russ King will use World of Outlaws points provisionals to start the first feature from the 25th and 26th starting spots respectively. Chris Madden will start 27th after earning a provisional for being the fastest qualifying early entrant to not make the feature. For being the first postmarked entry for this weekend's World Finals, Jeff Rine earned the final provisonal and will start 28th.

2:47 p.m. | Modified feature underway

The day's first feature race is underway as the big-block modifieds have taken the green flag. The Late Model feature will follow the modifieds.

2:42 p.m. | McDowell wins third consy

Dale McDowell drove to an easy win in the third and final consolation race to transfer to the feature. Will Vaught and Shannon Babb swapped the second position a number of times early in the race, until Vaught turned Babb sideways in turn three. Both cars spun and made heavy contact with the wall. The incident left Johnny Pursley and Chris Madden to battle for the second position, with Pursley taking the transfer position. Madden finished third ahead of Ricky Elliott and Eddie Carrier Jr.

Third consolation race: McDowell, Pursley, Madden, Elliott, Carrier, Jacob Hawkins, Rine, Lobb, George, Gunther, Drown, Nuttall, Scott, Gordon, Babb, Vaught, Ledbetter, DNS: Pittman.
