Thornton on pole for Silver Dollar Nationals

Ricky Thornton Jr. earned the pole starting position after Friday's heats.
Key notes: After Friday's double-heat race program at Shelby County Speedway, Ricky Thornton Jr. edged Bobby Pierce in passing points to earn the pole starting position for Saturday's $52,000-to-win Silver Dollar Nationals finale. ... Pierce was initially announced as the polesitter for the 80-lap feature, but after a postrace audit by Lucas Oil Series officials, Thornton was awarded the top starting spot. Both drivers finished with 128.08 points, with the tiebreaker going to the fastest lap recorded during either round of heat action. Thornton's quickest lap of 13.688 seconds — set in his second heat — bettered Pierce's best lap of 13.862, giving Thornton the pole. Pierce, who led the final 14 laps to win last year’s $25,053 Kosiski Family 53 feature at Shelby County, will start second. ... The 16th annual Al Belt Custom Homes Silver Dollar Nationals is at its third venue in five years. ... Founded at the now-closed I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., the event ran there 12 years (2011-’22) before being moving to Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., from 2023-’25. … Brandon Sheppard led the final six laps in winning Thursday’s $15,000 Silver Dollar prelim for his eighth Lucas Oil Series victory of the season. … Pierce skipped Thursday’s prelim after his father, Bob Pierce, suffered a stroke and underwent emergency surgery; he's recovering in an Omaha, Neb., hospital. ...
