What won the race: Polesitter Bo Slay of Milton, Fla., overcame a lap-10 restart stackup that triggered a red flag for Brett Frazier's frontstretch flip and led all 40 laps in winning Friday's Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series season opener at Super Bee Speedway. Slay beat Charlie Cole to the line by a commanding 7.815 seconds for the $4,000 payday, his first win of the season and first career MSCCS triumph.
Quotable: “This is awesome. The ol’ racetrack gets elbows up. Kinda what I told you earlier, that’s what we like. You gotta cowboy up a little bit, it was a little rough,” Slay said. “Man, this sure is sweet. We’ve struggled and struggled in the Super (Late Model) stuff. Just glad that we can get another one behind us. We’ve won a couple Super races but they’ve all been at our home track, so this about as far as we can get from our home track right here.”
Key notes: Slay earned his third career special event victory, adding to Southern All Star Series wins on Nov. 26, 2022, and March 30, 2024, each worth $5,000 at his home track of Southern Raceway. ... It's his first win of any kind since a 604 Crate victory last May 31 at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala. ... The race's second and final stoppage necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup after third-running Brett Frazier was eliminated on a lap-10 restart stackup that sent his car flipping down the frontstretch. Slay slowed after Jon Mitchell appeared to jump the start, causing the stackup that sent Frazier's brand-new AK Race Car upside down. The caution was charged to Mitchell, who restarted in the back before pulling off under green a couple laps later. ... Frazier was OK and shared animated discussions with Slay and Mitchell under the red flag. ... Chris Wall started eighth and finished fourth in making his first Late Model start in more than three years aboard Chad Thrash's No. 1c entry. ... The initial lap-10 yellow came when fourth-running Robbie Stuart hopped the turn-three cushion and slowed. ... Dakota Smith pulled off before completing a lap and was scored as the race's first retiree. ... The season opener lasted 20 minutes with five starters completing 40 laps.
On the move: Runner-up Charlie Cole of Wynne, Ark., started sixth.
