What won the race: Leading all the way after a first-lap skirmish with polesitter Chris Woods, home-track racer Trae Kirk of Monroe, Ga., earned $5,000 in capturing the Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series debut at Winder-Barrow Speedway. Topping a modest eight-car field, Kirk fought off a late challenge from Kenny Collins, taking the victory by 0.267 of a second for his second Super Late Model victory of the season at the track.
Quotable: "I tried to run the top as long as I could and then I saw Kenny's nose, so I got down. I knew there was a lot of moisture through (turns) three and four," Kirk said. "When I could hit it right, it was really good off (the corner) and I just started rolling the bottom because I saw his nose and I didn't know they were rolling the top like that or I probably would have moved back up. But I was just trying to ride behind the lapped car and not make a mistake."
Key notes: Trae Kirk, who started outside the front row, also won April’s Southern All Star Series visit to Winder-Barrow. ... Runner-up Kenny Collins cut a 2.5-second lead down to virtually nothing with 10 laps remaining and challenged Kirk, but couldn't find a way past. ... Kirk had a lapped car in front of him on the final lap but withstood the final charge by Collins off turn four. ... The lone caution appeared just after the initial start Kirk and polesitter Chris Woods made contact at the top of the backstretch, sending Woods around. ... The field was reset for the next start but Woods, with front-end damage, retired on the second lap (Woods won the night's 602 Crate Late Model feature). ... The 13-minute feature concluded at 10:29 p.m. ... Six cars were running at the finish, four on the lead lap. ... No drivers entered had previously won a Southern Thunder event. ... The track received a brief rain shower before hot laps.
