Ashton Winger led the final five laps at Davenport Speedway.
What won the race: Powering around the outside of Chris Simpson at the entrance of turn one, Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., regained the lead on lap 36 and paced the final five circuits at Davenport Speedway, winning Wednesday's $5,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature. Winger secured his second Super Late Model victory of the season and first on the Summer Nationals triumph.
Quotable: “I really thought stepped on it down there in one, Chris (Simpson) is one of the best at running the bottom and it actually started to (take rubber) down getting into (turn) three,” Winger said. “My car was really good, it was really maneuverable. I knew I was going to have a pretty good run, when I could wrap that bottom like I needed to. My car has just been really fast, it’s been really fast the entire year really, I mean not even just the summer, just a bunch of dumb (stuff) has happened. It felt like three different kind of races there, you know I really thought I gave that one away, but I kinda got to searching around there and I felt leaving (turn) four it started to clean up. I could just keep my momentum up better (running the outside) and man I don’t know how close it was there leaving (turn) two, but you couldn’t have fit much between us.”
Key notes: Winger led twice for a total of 14 laps (20-28; 36-40) en route to winning his seventh career Summer Nationals main event, his first since winning six races in 2021. ... Last year's series race winner Chris Simpson led seven laps (29-35) before being overtaken by Winger and settling for second, 1.133 seconds back. ... Ninth-starting Jason Feger rallied to third. ... Polesitter Chad Simpson led the first 19 laps before giving way to Winger; he finished fourth. ... Tuesday's sixth-round winner at Moberly, Billy Moyer Jr. advanced five positions and finished fifth. ... Drake Troutman was running as high as fourth before another flat right rear tire — his second in as many nights — thwarted a good run; Troutman's team changed the flat and he finished eighth. ... Driving a Ronnie Delk-owned Longhorn Chassis, 14-year-old Carson Brown of New London, N.C., started 21st and finished 11th in his Super Late Model debut under the tutelage of Mike Marlar. ... Wednesday's feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 20 minutes, with 15 competitors completing all 40 laps.
On the move: Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., started ninth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Winger’s Jeff Mathews Motorsports Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Johnny Doan Plumbing, RV Select Inc., Keyser Manufacturing, Integra Shocks, Angry Elephant Tattoo and Piercing, FK Rod Ends, Super K Express, Hoosier Tire, Simpson Race Products, Collins Signs, DirtCarLift.com, VP Race Fuels, Boswell Oil and WrapTeck.
