Kyle Hardy celebrates his second Ohio Valley Series victory at WVMS.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead for good when Matt Melvin retired under a lap-28 caution, fifth-starting Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., held off furious late challenges from Tyler Carpenter to win Friday's $5,000 Hillbilly 50 at West Virginia Motor Speedway. Hardy beat Carpenter by nearly a straightaway for his second Burlile Performance Ohio Valley Late Model Series victory of the season, both coming at WVMS.
Quotable: "That was a lot of fun. Tyler (Carpenter), he’s fun to race with, just man, that was a heck of a race," Hardy said. "I heard him down there and I didn’t know he was there and I come down, we touched a little bit. I knew it wasn’t intentional, but man, that was a race from the beginning. We was side-by-side with (Matt Melvin) right here the whole race."
Key notes: Hardy stuck primarily to the inside in leading three times for 29 laps (16-18, 24-26, 28-50), fighting off late pressure from Tyler Carpenter for his 17th overall feature win of the season. ... Carpenter initially slid by Hardy in turn one on the 38th lap, only for Hardy to regain control by the exit of turn two; the two frontrunners made heavy contact on the 41st lap, with Carpenter taking the lead before his right-rear quarter panel ripped off down the backstretch, triggering the race's fourth caution. ... Hardy maintained control on the lap-41 restart and led the final 10 laps largely unchallenged for his second Ohio Valley Series win this season at WVMS, adding to his $2,000 triumph in the tour's April 11 season opener. ... Carpenter faded without his right-rear quarter panel and nipped Corey Conley at the line by 0.018 of a second to finish second, with Conley coming home in third. ... Matt Melvin led twice for seven laps (1-6, 27) before retiring under a lap-28 caution when Jared Hawkins slowed in turn four. ... Polesitter Chad Roush led twice for 14 laps (7-15, 19-23) before he retired under a lap-24 yellow after a turn-one melee involving Corey DeLancey, Donnie Dotson and Eric Monk. ... The race was slowed two other times, first for Pete Crum slowing and retiring on the 16th lap, before Logan Hitt spun in turn four on lap 43. ... The 58th annual Hillbilly Hundred continues with twin $6,000-to-win Super Late Model prelims Saturday prior to Sunday's 100-lap, $25,000-to-win finale at WVMS.
On the move: Corey Conley of Wellsburg, W.Va., started 14th and finished third.
