Terry Phillips won Saturday's $5,014 Steve Rushin Memorial.
What won the race: Overtaking fellow Hall of Famer Billy Moyer with an inside move out of turn four at the completion of the eighth lap, second-starting Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., led the rest of Saturday's 40-lap Steve Rushin Memorial at Legit Speedway Park. Phillips knifed through lapped traffic with precision and beat Moyer by 1.969 seconds for the $5,014 payday on the first-year POWRi Heartland Late Model Tour.
Quotable: "It seems like when we come here, it’s one of the last tracks where you drive off the right-front (tire) and us old guys tend to do that all right," Phillips said. "That was a lot of fun, (Billy Moyer) is a hero of mine. (We) raced each other clean, that’s how it’s supposed to be. I really appreciate that."
Key notes: Phillips led the final 33 laps unchallenged for his second Heartland Tour win, adding to a May 15 victory at the West Plains, Mo., 3/8-mile oval, worth $3,000. ... Phillips was poised for the weekend sweep in May until the finale was erroneously extended an extra lap, allowing Tyler Kuykendall to steal the $3,000 payday; Phillips was also awarded $3,000 for finishing runner-up after the flagging error. ... Billy Moyer led the opening seven laps from the pole until giving way to Phillips and settling for second. ... Making his first Late Model start since May 24, 2025's Show-Me 100, seventh-starting Tyler Stevens quickly moved into third by lap three and completed the podium. ... Making his second start in the last 15 months, Tanner Mullens prevailed to finish fourth after a midrace back-and-forth battle with Scott Crigler. ... Tenth-starting Kyle Beard slipped by Crigler on lap 22 to round out the top-five finishers. ... Garrett Taylor (lap 23) and Clay Suckey (lap 38) both worked by Crigler in the closing laps, dropping him to eighth, though Crigler assumed the points lead after his son, Sawyer Crigler, pitted before taking the green and soldiered to a 19th-place finish as the last starter to complete 40 laps. ... The race was slowed three times, first when Charlie Cole slowed and retired on the 10th lap. ... Jason Sivils slammed the turn-one wall for the second stoppage on lap 22 before Kanyan Methvin hit in nearly the same spot on lap 36. ... The two-day event was originally scheduled Friday-Saturday before Friday's 30-lap, $3,014-to-win prelim was rain-postponed to Sunday; it honors Steve Rushin of Poplar Bluff, Mo., a longtime racer and supporter, including fielding cars for multiple racers across the Midwest. Rushin died on Sept. 9, 2023, at the age of 57. ... Saturday's 40-lapper lasted 24 minutes with 21 starters running at the finish. ... Cole Murphy pulled off before taking the green flag.
On the move: Clay Stuckey of Shreveport, La., started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Phillips drives a Mann Motorsports Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Andy’s Frozen Custard, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Keyser Manufacturing, Don Babb Motorsports, VP Racing Fuels and Midwest Sheet Metal.
