Deisel Jones celebrates at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss.
What won the race: Deisel Jones of Alabaster, Ala., repelled race-long pressure from Joseph Brown then survived a rash of cautions and restarts to lead all 75 laps from the pole in Saturday's 22nd annual Governor's Cup at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Jones beat Bubba Roling by 0.628 of a second for the $10,000 payday, his first career Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA 604 Series victory and third overall feature win of the season.
Quotable: “I really just tightened (the car) up a lot for this feature and when we got in that rubber, I was a little tight. I was just making it work,” Jones said. “I guess Joseph (Brown) got on the inside of me and hit the (infield) tire, or something, but it looks good for all our points guys that he finished in the back and (we) gained some points.”
Key notes: Deisel Jones, CRUSA's Winter Shootout champ, repelled regular season points leader Joseph Brown for much of the opening 70 laps, with a lap-12 caution negating Brown's early bid for the race lead. ... Brown continually showed his nose inside of Jones until his left-front clipped a turn-two infield tire on the 69th lap, folding Brown's nosepiece under. ... Jones led the final six laps unchallenged for his third feature win of the season, adding to two Winter Shootout victories. ... Eighth-starting Bubba Roling inherited the runner-up spot on the lap-69 restart after Brown's mishap, but never seriously challenged over the final six laps. ... Georgian Jeff Smith ran as high as fourth in the early going before slipping to sixth at the checkers. ... Jason Altiers improved nine positions to finish 10th. ... The race was slowed by four cautions, the first on lap 12 when Brad Berry slowed. ... Sixth-running Nick Thrash slowed with a flat right-rear tire for the second yellow flag on lap 62. ... Eleventh-starting Jimmy Thomas charged to briefly take second from Brown on the 56th lap before backsliding to 13th by lap 64 and slowing to trigger the third caution. ... Brown's infield tire contact drew the final stoppage on lap 69. ... Trent McLeod spun from seventh on the final lap, collecting Josh Parkerson and Bailey Callahan; Parkerson limped across the line as the 15th and final starter to complete 75 laps in the 33-minute race.
On the move: Austin Yarbrough of Blackshear, Ga., started 21st and finished third.
