What won the race: Rebounding after losing a shot at victory the previous night due to an early tangle, Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., was unbeatable on Saturday at East Alabama Motor Speedway in driving to a dominant flag-to-flag triumph in the 60-lap finale of the 52nd National 100. The 30-year-old driver beat Brenden Smith to the finish line by 0.750 of a second as he earned $25,000 for the biggest win of his career.
Quotable: “I really feel like we had a car to win last night. We just had tough luck, like as normal we have here,” Herrington said. “But we just turned it around tonight. It got one lane, but these guys have put in so much work in the past two or three weeks … it’s unbelievable. This is amazing. I never would’ve dreamed I’d be standing here.”
Key notes: Herrington registered his first win in four career National 100 starts and his first triumph since joining Steve Lampley’s Illinois-based team in late August. The Lampley Racing No. 33 is maintained by former DIRTcar national champion Randy Korte. … Herrington, who was knocked from the lead on lap four of Friday’s 40-lap opener after contact from eventual winner Cody Overton sent him spinning between turns one and two, was never seriously challenged while pacing every circuit off the pole position. He built as much as a full straightaway edge before Brenden Smith was able to close in over the final 10 laps as Herrington paced himself behind slower traffic on a track that was bottom-dominant for virtually the entire distance. ... Smith held second place from start-to-finish to record a career-best National 100 finish in his third start in the event, besting his eighth-place run in 2025. … Dennis Erb Jr., the 2016 National 100 winner, grabbed third on a lap-15 restart and stayed there to the finish. … Ryan Gustin and Jimmy Owens finished fourth and fifth, respectively, after also moving into their final finishing positions on the lap-15 restart. … Friday’s winner Cody Overton started fourth but slipped to ninth on the opening lap and never recovered. He retired on lap 32 and was credited with an 18th-place finish. … The race was slowed by caution flags on lap 15 and 25.
On the move: Todd Morrow of Penton, Ala., started 20th and finished seventh.
