What won the race: Sweeping around polesitter Gordy Gundaker on a lap-15 restart, sixth-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., cruised the rest of Saturday's 50-lap CMH Diamond Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway for a $25,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory. Sheppard's second series win this season (and second in nine days) came 3.775 seconds ahead of runner-up Hudson O'Neal at the state-of-the-art oval.
Quotable: "It was an awesome track both nights this weekend," Sheppard said. "They did a heck of a job with it. We're just super happy and super thankful to be here in victory lane. Hopefully we can keep building off we've got here and have some consistency."
Key notes: Winner Brandon Sheppard kept more than a two-second margin on runner-up Hudson O'Neal in the second half of the race, leading by nearly four seconds. ... Sheppard notched his 32nd full-field victory on the Lucas Oil circuit. ... Reigning series champ Ricky Thornton Jr. and reigning track champ Justin Wells swapped third in the final laps with Thornton getting the spot. ... Polesitter Gordy Gundaker, who was looking for his first Lucas Oil victory, led the first 14 laps and settled for seventh. ... A single caution slowed the 50-lapper on the 15th lap when Donald McIntosh spun in turn two. ... Jonathan Davenport, who entered the race leading series points, set fast time and was dominating the first heat when he retired with a lap remaining because of his car's harmonic balancer; he took a provisional in a backup car. ... With weather threatening, the feature wrapped up before 9:30 p.m. ... Thornton won Friday's $15,000 weekend opener.
On the move: Provisional starter Jonathan Davenport started 23rd and finished eighth.
