Daniel Boles (20) held off John Ownbey (44) for his first career victory.
What won the race: Teenager Daniel Boles of Clinton, Tenn., rebounded after a penalty on the opening start and held off John Ownbey to win Friday's $3,000 Jail Breaker Potato Chips Topless Outlaw Series debut at Penton Raceway. The 16-year-old Boles, son of Stacy Boles, led all 30 laps and appeared to beat Ownbey to the checkers by 0.764 of a second before Ownbey was disqualified in postrace technical inspection.
Quotable: “Down here (in turns one and two) it got a little rough, but other than that, (the track) felt real good,” the young Boles said. “Them laps kept feeling like it was getting longer and longer. Thanks to all these sponsors and big thanks to Shane Clanton crewing for us tonight.”
Key notes: Boles, a high school junior, earned his first career Late Model victory after entering with a couple of sportsman division wins to his credit; he's now the youngest winner in Topless Outlaw Series history. ... Boles was penalized a starting row for jumping the race's opening start until Dusty Jones spun on the second restart attempt, collecting Kyle Courtney, Rusty Ballenger and Kelby Norwood, among others and necessitating a five-minute red flag for cleanup; Jones did not continue, handing the second starting spot back to Boles. ... The seventh-starting Courtney, of Knoxville, Tenn., took third from Austin Horton on lap 24 and crossed the line in third, but inherited the runner-up spot following Ownbey's DQ; Ownbey pressured Boles nearly the entire distance before getting relegated to 24th in the final rundown. ... Horton, of Whitesburg, Ga., was lifted to third. ... Norwood continued until slowing to draw the race's third caution and retiring on the fourth lap; Ballenger pulled in a handful of laps later. ... Walker Greer spun form 16th for the fourth and final stoppage of the night on lap 17. ... Rucker Orr pulled off on the opening lap after suffering damage in his heat race. ... The 30-lapper lasted 21 minutes, with 13 starters completing the distance. ... Austin Horton won the 604 Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Smiths Station, Ala., started 15th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Boles drives a Capital Race car powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Lowe’s Tows, Advanced Transportation, Hoosier Tire South by Drake and Keyser Manufacturing.
