Trevor Sise and supporters celebrate his richest career feature victory.
What won the race: Trevor Sise of Knoxville, Tenn., fended off a late-race surge from Hayden Cardwell en route to leading all 100 laps of Saturday's 15th annual UBB Miners Memorial at Beckley Motor Speedway. Sise beat Cardwell to the line by 0.177 of a second for his richest career payday ($15,000) and his third career American Crate All-Star Series presented by PPM victory, his first since Sept. 5, 2020, at Lizard Creek Speedway in Hanover, W.Va.
Quotable: “This is absolutely freakin’ awesome, I mean, I can’t …” Sise trailed off, overcome with emotion. “This is just unbelievable. I’ve worked so hard to get here and we finally got us a big one, so I’m pretty excited about it.”
Key notes: Sise's previous richest victory was worth $3,500 on May 19, 2018, an unsanctioned Steel-Head Nationals victory at the now-defunct 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, Tenn. ... Second-starting Hayden Cardwell bounced his right rear off the wall on the final lap, but came up just short at the line. Cardwell's Beckley frustration continues after getting swept up in a late-race crash while leading last year's UBB Miners Memorial. ... Dillon Brown briefly held the runner-up spot before finishing third, just 0.175 of a second behind Cardwell. ... Zack Dohm prevailed to finish fourth after a back-and-forth battle with Benji Hicks during the race's second half; Hicks finished fifth. ... Logan Roberson retired from 14th on the 83rd lap. ... The race pays tribute to the 29 miners who lost their lives in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine on April 5, 2010. ... The feature was slowed by nine cautions and lasted longer than 76 minutes, with 18 starters completing 100 laps.
On the move: John Ruggiero Jr. of Lincolnton, N.C., started 11th and finished eighth.
