Dylan Thornton (38) held off Jesse Sobbing (99) for the win at Stuart.
What won the race: Sixth-starting Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., outdueled Blair Nothdurft for control on lap 20 then repelled Jesse Sobbing in the final stages to win Friday's $3,000 Malvern Bank West Series feature at Stuart International Speedway. Thornton led the final 11 laps and took the checkers 0.649 of a second ahead of Sobbing for his first career West Series victory and his fifth overall win of the season.
Quotable: “That (lap seven) pileup over there, I got into the wall. The whole front end’s knocked off of it, it vibrates real bad, it’s definitely ill.” Thornton said. “That was pretty hard to drive there, I’m glad they sorted (the lap-seven scoring confusion) out. (Series officials) were going to send half of us that stopped to the tail and half of us that didn’t. There probably would’ve been a problem with that, but glad they got that figured out.”
Key notes: Thornton adds his first career Malvern West victory to his three East Series wins. ... He was awarded $3,900 for the victory after earning the $900 'lucky sixth place starter' bonus courtesy of Skyline Materials. ... Thornton was recently selected out of more than 500 applicants as driver of Cody Sommer’s No. 13 Race DRT house car for June 5-7’s Dream XXXI at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. ... Nothdurft, of Renner, S.D., led twice for 14 laps (1-7, 13-19) before slipping to fourth. ... Rookie Dallon Murty followed Sobbing by Nothdurft on the lap-24 restart and recorded his second third-place finish across both Malvern Bank-sponsored tours. ... The race's first caution came on the seventh lap when Brian Kosiski and J.J. Rodeman tangled in turn two, leaving several leaders spinning to avoid contact. After a lengthy delay series officials allowed all leaders to maintain their original positions. ... Brian Kosiski continued to a 19th-place finish, while Rodeman tangled with Jay Burdic for the second stoppage on lap 15. ... Andrew Kosiski slowed from 16th to draw the fourth and final slowdown at the start of lap 24. He did not continue. ... Kyle Berck utilized a series provisional after arriving late because of traffic issues; his first on-track action came in the night's consolation. ... The 30-lapper lasted 24 minutes, with 21 starters completing the distance.
