Rusty Schlenk shows off his paycheck and trophy at Attica.
What won the race: Regaining the lead when a broken radiator hose sent Devin Shiels over the turn-two banking on lap 27, Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, led the rest of Friday's 30-lap Stephen Wagner Memorial at Attica Raceway Park. Schlenk, officially scored as leading the last eight laps after Shiels led 22 circuits, earned $5,049 in beating Colten Burdette to the checkers by 2.176 seconds in the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series opener.
Quotable: “I hope y’all loved that race, I hope you had as much fun as I did,” Schlenk said. “I tell all my drivers to drive it 80 percent at all times and leave 100 percent for when you need it, but man, we had to be (at) 100 percent every lap tonight, that was wild. Hell of a race, it was fun, track was a little faster than I’d like it, but we all had to race on the same surface and it put on a good show for the fans.”
Key notes: Schlenk, the reigning series champ, secured his fourth career Iron-Man triumph and his fifth overall victory of the season. ... It's his 47th career win at Attica's third-mile; he's unbeaten in four 2025 starts. ... Devin Shiels led the opening 22 laps until the third-starting Schlenk chased him down from 1.471 seconds back and powered around Shiels amid traffic. ... Schlenk led laps 23-26 before hopping the turn-two cushion, allowing Shiels to lead lap 27 just before losing a radiator hose and sliding off the racing surface, drawing the race's lone caution, which reset the field with 26 laps complete. ... Schlenk was scored as leading the final eight laps. ... Colten Burdette inherited the runner-up spot on the lap-27 restart, but never challenged Schlenk. ... Todd Brennan finished fourth after slipping by Kyle Moore on the 28th circuit. ... The race honored Stephen Wagner, former owner of the No. 49 Late Model who died April 3. He owned the car Larry Scott drove in the 1992 World 100 as well as 1986-87 Johnny Appleseed Classic victories at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio; Wagner's family added $49 to each finishing position in his honor. ... The Iron-Man season opener lasted 11 minutes, with 13 starters completing 30 laps. ... In prelims, Schlenk topped the six fastest qualifiers for $1,049 Australian Pursuit victory.
On the move: Ryan Missler of Bellevue, Ohio, started 13th and finished eighth.
