Jake Jackson earned $5,000 for his Super Late Model debut.
What won the race: Teenager Jake Jackson of Gilkey, N.C., dominated 40 laps to win Saturday's 43rd annual Shrine Benefit Race at Laurens County Speedway, collecting $5,000 in his Super Late Model debut. Jackson, 18, captured his first career Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series victory and his second overall triumph of the season after topping June's $2,800 GM Performance 602 Series stop at Harris Speedway in Rutherfordton, N.C.
Key notes: Jackson finished ninth in Saturday's GM Performance 602 Crate feature. ... In the Carolina Clash event, second-starting Dale Timms pursued Jackson for the opening 10 laps before slowing to draw the race's second and final caution. ... Adam Yarbrough inherited the runner-up spot on the lap-11 restart and trailed Jackson the rest of the way, finishing 3.303 seconds back. ... Fellow teen Luke Cooper finished third. The 16-year-old Cooper topped the $1,500 GM 602 Series race there earlier in the evening. ... Luke Morey finished fourth, making it three teenagers in the top four spots. ... The event honored Laurens resident, Cogsdill, a former racer who was offered ownership of Laurens County Speedway in 1977 and operated the facility until retiring in 2009. Cogsdill founded the inaugural Shriner Race in 1982, with all proceeds benefiting the Laurens County Shrine Club and the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital; he died earlier in the year on Feb. 22. ... The main event lasted 23 minutes, with four drivers completing 40 laps and six running at the finish. ... Bryson Fleming scratched.
On the move: Nick Deitz of Hodges, S.C., started ninth and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Jackson’s Excel Racing Chassis carries sponsorship from Thompson Logging, Jackson Grading, Tri City Towing, Styles HVAC Services, Mountain Valley Logging, Carolina Cafe, The Print Shack, RMI, Penske Racing Shocks and Wrayz Wrapz.
