Feature winner Jason Welshan zips around Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Grabbing control from early leader Oliver Gentry, fourth-starting Jason Welshan of Maryville, Tenn., led the remainder of Saturday's 50-lap Larry Spurlock Memorial at Talladega Short Track. Welshan held on to earn a $7,526 payday, his first on the Vision Wheel Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series.
Key notes: Sixth-starting Tyler Bare moved into second on a lap-25 restart and pursued Welshan the entire second half, pressuring him in the closing laps and finishing just a few lengths back at the finish. ... Gentry, of Newnan, Ga., led the opening handful of laps from the pole before settling for fourth. ... Jake Traylor advanced give spots and placed sixth. ... Dan Breuer overcame transferring through a consolation and rounded out the top-10 finishers. ... Series points leader Russell Erwin was collected in a multicar melee in the early laps, an incident that ended the night for Lucas Burns and Chase Oliver. Erwin continued and finished 12th, one lap down. ... Saturday's event honored Thomas “Larry” Spurlock of Gadsden, Ala., a multitime race winner and track champion who died on March 30, 2015. The 50-lap series debut at Talladega was slowed by four cautions.
On the move: Taylor Puckett of Greer, S.C., started 16th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Welshan’s Savage Chassis house car is powered by a Yoder Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from A-Plus Collision Center, Competition Racing Equipment, JJ Trucking and Excavating, Milwood Plumbing, Hickman Manufacturing, Booger Brooks Racing, Hux Motorsports, Hoosier Tire South, Stealth Racing Carburetors, Schoenfeld Headers, Fast Shafts and Matlock Decal Company.
