Scott Ward celebrates his $3,000 victory atop his car.
What won the race: Taking command from Tyler Peterson on a late-race restart, fourth-starting Scott Ward narrowly defeated Jeff Provinzino to win Sunday's Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series-sanctioned 12th annual Marilyn Olson Memorial at Casino Speedway. Ward edged Provinzino to the finish line by 0.138 of a second to capture a $3,000 payday at his home track.
Quotable: “I gave Tyler (Peterson) room, I didn’t want to do what I did to Cole (Searing), when I came in (to the corner) too hot,” Ward said as he was overcome with emotion. “I was hoping I gave Peterson enough room so he could go alongside me and I think I did. This weekend has been emotional, just up and down and this is awesome.”
Key notes: Ward dedicated the victory to late friend and racer Tim Waba. ... Ward notched his first series victory of the season and sixth of his career, with three coming at Casino. ... Points leader Cole Searing paced the opening 34 circuits before suffering a flat left-rear tire and surrendering the lead to eighth-starting Tyler Peterson. ... Peterson, who was looking to make it 3-for-4 on the weekend, finished third. ... Consolation race winner, Shane Sabraski rallied from 17th to sixth. ... The 40-lap feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 26 minutes.
On the move: Rick Niemi of Eveleth, Minn., started 22nd and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Ward’s Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Badlands Ranch & Rodeo Equipment, Lift Gator, #1 Welding, Dakota Appliance, Boldt Construction, Jesse Vincent Construction, George’s Sanitation, Lone Pine Bar & Grill, Cloud 9 Bar & Casino, Grangaard Construction, Nickerson Harvesting, Weelborg Insurance, Wehrs Machine and Performance Parts and Cain Designs & Wraps.
