Ricky Thornton Jr. celebrates after leading the final two laps.
What won the race: Denying Garrett Alberson his first Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory, tour points leader Ricky Thornton Jr. dove under the polesitter in turn three on the second-to-last lap and captured the 45-lap Cowboy Classic at Lucas Oil Speedway. Thornton earned $10,000 in capitalizing on a late resrtart while Alberson, who took the lead from fellow front-row starter Chris Simpson on the eighth lap, settled for second and his best series finish. Thornton notched his seventh Lucas Oil victory of the season in the Show-Me 100 weekend opener.
Quotable: "(Alberson) missed the bottom in those two laps in a row and, whenever he slid high down the backstraightaway, I knew he was he was going to be out in the slick and I just tried to get far enough up so he knew I was going to be down there," Thornton said. "We touched a little bit getting into (turn) three, but (it's) awesome. This one's pretty special, it's 400th career win. It's been a lot of hard work and dedication."
Key notes: Thornton notched his 30th career Lucas Oil victory as well as his 400th overall feature victory of his multidivision career. He credited his choice of a softer right-rear tire than most of his competitors. ... The lone caution appeared for Chad Simpson's turn-two spin with three laps remaining. ... Heat winner Jonathan Davenport started on the tail because he switched to a backup car; he finished ninth. ... Mike Marlar also dropped to the rear at the start because he presented his car in staging with an unapproved tire. ... Alberson lowered his own track record with a 14.443-second lap. ... Drivers earned qualifying points in Thursday's prelims and will do so again Friday to set the top 18 drivers locked into Saturday's $50,000-to-win Show-Me 100.
On the move: Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., started 23rd and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s SSI Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Dyno One, Hoker Trucking LLC, Coltman Farms Racing, Sub-Surface of Indiana, Big River Steel, Murty Farms, High Performance Lubricants, West Side Tractor Sales, Bilstein, Sunoco Race Fuels, FK Rod Ends, Allstar Performance, Dirt Car Lift, Midwest Sheet Metal and EMD Wraps.
Points chase: Lucas Oil before Wheatland Saturday (no points until Saturday): 1. Ricky Thornton Jr. (2,775); 2. Jonathan Davenport (2,645); 3. Devin Moran (2,550); 4. Mike Marlar (2,395); 5. Pre-race notes

The Show-Me 100 weekend kicks off with Thursday’s $10,000-to-win Cowboy Classic on a gorgeous day for racing. Skies have been sunny and the high temperature rose into the mid-80s. … The 63-car field is up three entries from last year’s event. … Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, is absent from competition, indicating his run as a Lucas Oil Series regular is ending this weekend. … Another tour regular missing from the pits is Boom Briggs of Bear Lake, Pa., who had to call off his trip because his older brother, Steve, was hospitalized with a medical issue and Boom was needed to help run the family’s trucking company. … Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., whose SSI Motorsports Longhorn is sporting a new, clean white-and-blue scheme with a “oil slick blue” vinyl used for the number, arrived at the track this afternoon after making an eight-hour drive from Iowa’s Clay County Fair Speedway where he scored a $16,667 IMCA stock car victory on Wednesday. … Payton Looney of Republic, Mo., who won the Show-Me 100 in 2020, is making his first start of the season with his Capital Race Car. … Also making his ’24 debut is Jared Landers of Batesville, Ark., who is driving as a second car fielded by his father, Lance, as a teammate to 2015 Show-Me 100 champion Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga. His former Coltman Farms Racing team is also in action with Tanner English of Benton, Ky., behind the wheel. … There was big news in the Roberts Racing pit stall on Thursday afternoon: driver Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., and his wife, Dani, announced that they’re expecting their first child. Dani’s due date to deliver a baby boy is Sept. 25, which the couple hopes will hold up so the newborn arrives at midweek between the Knoxville Nationals and Jackson 100 weekends. … Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who won three of the first four Show-Me 100s from 1993-96, is entered in Todd Cooney’s car. It’s his first attempt at the event since 2020 when he finished 25th. … No points provisionals will be available for the Thursday and Friday programs that don’t offer Lucas Oil Series points. … Lucas Oil Speedway’s regular Limited Late Model division is on the undercard with 21 cars signed in. … The start of hot laps was delayed about 20 minutes as the track crew completed running in the surface.
