Colton Leyendecker poses with the winner's hardware from Saturday's Battle at the Beach.
What won the race: Using an outside move to slip around early leader Corey Neil Jr., second-starting Colton Leyendecker of Holt, Fla., led the final 36 laps to win Saturday's $10,000 seventh annual Battle at the Beach at Southern Raceway. Leyendecker scored his first feature victory of the season and his first career Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout Series triumph.
Quotable: “I’ve been in some long (races) here, but probably not (93 minutes),” Leyendecker said. “The 24 (Steven Jernigan) was crowding the crap outta me every start there and I just finally got good and he gave me a little bit of room here down the frontstretch and I drove by him. I was right behind the 7 (Corey Neil Jr.), so I just let her go right on into (turn) three too and crowded him a little bit. I did what I had to do and was thankful to get by both of them.”
Key notes: The pole-starting Neil, of Bridge City, Texas, settled for second after leading the first 14 laps, taking the checkers 0.833 of a second behind Leyendecker. ... Sixth-starting Matt Henderson moved into third on a lap-25 restart and completed the podium finishers. ... Joseph Joiner improved eight positions and finished fourth at his home track. ... Steven Jernigan ran as high as second in the early laps before fading to round-out the top five. ... Will Roland persevered through multiple incidents and finished sixth, clinching the Winter Shootout Series title. ... Roland's closest challenger, Tyler Millwood ran as high fourth in the opening stages before slipping to finish seventh. ... John Winge gained seven spots and finished 10th, the last driver running at the finish. ... Saturday's feature was marred by multiple incidents, the largest coming on lap six when Mario Gresham spun from eighth and triggered a six-car melee that ended with Ryan French's car nearly getting upside down; it took 30 minutes to get French's car righted and towed back to the pits. ... The race's second red flag came on the ensuing restart when Will Roland and Bo Slay made contact, sending Larry Fitzsimmons spinning and getting pushed over onto his roof; the multi-car skirmish required 15 minutes for cleanup and ended the nights for Fitzsimmons, Cody Smith and Jesse Enterkin. ... All drivers were unhurt. ... Slay, of Milton, Fla., continued until spinning from eighth to draw the race's 12th and final caution on lap 32. ... Saturday's 50-lap main event lasted 93 minutes, with 10 drivers completing the distance.
On the move: Matt Dooley of Fayetteville, Ga., started 24th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Leyendecker’s Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Ward built Fabrication, CJL Construction, CJL Homes, Renegade Race and Performance Fuel by Wilson and Bilstein Shocks.
