Kyle Peterlin heads to Sunday's WCS win at Hibbing (Minn.) Raceway.
What won the race: Completing a sweep of Hibbing Raceway's Labor Day Shootout on the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series, hometown driver Kyle Peterlin went around polesitter Jake Redetzke on the fourth lap and controlled the rest of the 40-lapper for his second $3,000 victory in as many nights. Peterlin took the checkers 0.464 of a second ahead of eighth-starting Jeff Massingill for his third WCS victory of the season and fifth of his career.
Key notes: Peterlin, who celebrated with a series of donuts after passing postrace inspection, has won four Labor Day Shootout features in his career. ... He's the fifth Late Model driver to sweep the weekend following Tom Nesbitt, Rick Aukland, Rick Egersdorf and Steve Laursen. ... Peterlin has eight victories overall in 2023. ... Three cautions slowed the action, including on the second lap for a turn-four shuffle that saw Pat Doar do a 360-degree spin and left Skeeter Estey and Ryan Mikkelson out of shape (another caution appeared on the restart with several cars involved). ... On the 11th lap, Mikkelson spun in turn two. ... Mark Heinle scratched from the feature. ... Backstretch lighting issues caused an hour-long delay midway through the program.
On the move: Ryan Mikkelson of Alexandria, Minn., was involved in two cautions but started 24th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Peterlin’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Town & Country Garages & Cabins, Up North Lettering, Grandma and Grandpa Peterlin, Schaeffer’s Racing Oil, Speedwerx, Shocks by Hammer, AFCO Brakes, Allstar Performance and Factory Team Snap Signs.
Points chase: After Hibbing: 1. Pat Doar (1,510); 2. Jake Redetzke (1,418); 3. Jeff Massingill (1,387); 4. Sam Mars (1,315); 5. John Kaanta (1,240).
