Jason Feger celebrates his $10,000 victory at Paducah.
What won the race: Cycling back around to lead the last four laps after his own flat tire on the third lap, series points leader Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., survived a spate of flats at Paducah International Raceway for a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory. Feger notched his third series victory in 2023 and 26th overall in taking the checkers 1.237 seconds ahead of Ashton Winger, who dominated 27 laps and had a seven-second lead when he had a flat right rear. Drake Troutman restarted as the leader on lap 27 but never officially led a lap after suffering a flat right-rear, his second such flat while leading in the final laps of a series event.
Quotable: "You've got to be smart at this place. It's a really hard track. It's really technical and there's some tricks to it that most people don't know," Feger said. "I've had some wise old guys who used to race here a lot who taught me how to get around his place and avoid the flat tires. Unfortunately, we got one early but it's better to have one early than late. So after that I was trying to really not run the top unless I absolutely had to, and just be super-patient with a with the traffic."
Key notes: Feger won his first Summer Nationals race at Paducah, where he's had significant success including three USA World 50 vitories. ... Feger's previous 2023 series victories came at the Brownstown (Ill.) Bullring and Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway. ... Feger was running seventh at Paducah before leaders fell by the wayside with flats. ... Six cautions slowed the action, mostly for single-car incidents. ... Drake Troutman's flat while leading lap on 28 drew the fifth yellow; he then spun into the infield with left-side damage on lap 29, climbed out his car and walked to the inside of the homestretch to signal his anger toward Bob Gardner. ... Fourth-running Tyler Clem, who ran second most of the race, slowed for a lap-28 yellow; during that caution, Winger dropped to the infield with his flat. ... Mick Quin and Brent Vosbergen spun on the fourth lap. ... The third-running Feger had a lap-three flat tire. ... The initial start was called back. ... Paducah hosted the series for the 20th time. ... Six drivers completed 31 laps (there was an extra circuit because of the green-white-checkered finish).
On the move: Morgan Bagley of Longview, Texas, started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Feger’s Longhorn Chassis used a Clements engine with sponsorship from Titan Industries, Digital Copy Systems, Hoker Trucking, The Big Cheese MM, Floyd’s Waste Systems, Remtek Enterprises, and RLM Enterprises and Cheap Cars.
