Charlie McKenna led all 25 laps to win his third career Hoker Trucking Series feature.
What won the race: Pole-starting Charlie McKenna of Ames, Iowa, led all 25 laps at West Liberty Raceway, winning Saturday's $3,000 Summertime Showdown. McKenna notched his first win of the season and the third Hoker Trucking Series victory of his career, his first since 2021 at Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa.
Quotable: “Well you know, when you start up front, you’re really not sure where to go,” McKenna said. “If you were paying attention in them heats, typically at West Liberty, it’s faster on the top early and then it moves down and a lot of times it would be on the bottom. Tonight, it almost looked like it was the inverse of that. They talk about how much air matters, well you go to a big half (mile) and it’s a lot easier that way. I didn’t sense (Chad Holladay). I wasn’t sure (how close he was). I had some left I wasn’t sure how much to use, I wasn’t sure what my right rear looked like, but I guess he was close at the end.”
Key notes: Fifth-starting Chad Holladay moved into the runner-up position on lap 12 and pressured McKenna late, finishing a scant 0.266 of a second back; Holladay has assumed the Hoker Trucking series points lead. … National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Jeff Aikey started fourth and finished third. ... Brian Harris and Andy Eckrich each advanced three positions, finishing sixth and eighth. ... Luke Goedert gained five spots and finished ninth. ... Dave Eckrich started 16th and finished 10th. ... Justin Kay ran as high as fifth in the early laps before losing an engine on lap nine. ... Saturday's green-to-checkered feature was completed without incident and lasted only nine minutes, with 10 drivers completing all 25 laps. ... Hoker Trucking Series competitors return to West Liberty Raceway for another $3,000-to-win show on Aug. 19.
On the move: Derrick Stewart of Ainsworth, Iowa, started 10th and finished fourth.
