Charlie Sandercock celebrates his $3,000 Winchester victory.
What won the race: Northern invader Charlie Sandercock of Belleville, Ontario, captured Saturday's Battle of the Bay finale at Winchester (Va.) Speedway for a $3,000 RUSH Crate Late Model Series victory. Sandercock took the checkers three-tenths of a second ahead of fellow second-row starter Mike Wonderling Jr.
Quotable: “Track conditions worked out for us and I can’t believe this happened," Sandercock said. "There are a lot of racers that were behind me and I knew I couldn’t give up until the last lap was done and here we are. I’m a high side kind of driver and always prefer it. I feel more comfortable than rolling around the bottom. The track kind of came to us tonight."
Key notes: Polesitter Bryce Davis led the first three laps and settled for fourth. ... Nine drivers completed 30 laps in a race halted by a lengthy red flag on lap 28 for Russell Erwin's frightening multiple-flip accident down the frontstretch. Erwin, who ran among the top three early, climbed out on his own and was checked out by medical personnel. He told DirtonDirt.com on Sunday that a CAT scan was clear but he has a concussion and soreness. ... Rookie Crate Late Model racer Bailey Tolson was ninth in his first series start, ending the race with nosepiece damage. ... Winchester hosted the fourth and final round of the fifth annual Battle of the Bay Speedweek. ... Rain delayed the beginning of Saturday's program.
On the move: Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., started 23rd and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Sandercock's No. 57 is sponsored by Scott Trudeau Construction, Stampkrete, Deerhaven Motorsports, Bellevue Fabricating, Rapid Rad Service, K-D Transmissions, Polaris and Eibach Springs.
Points chase: Kyle Hardy won the Battle of the Bay Speedweek points (worth $1,000) for the second time in three years. Battle of the Bay Final: 1. Kyle Hardy (381); 2. Trevor Collins (379); 3. Nick Davis (358); 4. Charlie Sandercock (357); 5. Jeremy Wonderling (353).
