Jesse Sobbing wins Sunday's $4,000 Maschmann Memorial Invitational at Knoxville Raceway.
What won the race: Jesse Sobbing of Malvern, Iowa, inherited the lead when race-long leader Kyle Berck crashed in turn two at Knoxville Raceway and led the final five laps for a $4,000 Bob Maschmann Memorial victory. Sobbing's 22-lap victory is his first of the season and first of his career with the sister Hoker Trucking Series and his sixth career Malvern Bank Series win.
Quotable: "I didn't have nothing for Kyle, I mean that is unfortunate to wreck his car like that, but I will say clean air was huge for how my car handled," Sobbing said. "Pretty cool (to win here), I've been beating up and down the road all year with the west series and this is actually my first win with these guys this year."
Key notes: Berck of Marquette, Neb., led the first 17 laps from the pole before appearing to have a failure in the right-front of his car, sending him head-first into the tall Knoxville barrier. Berck was uninjured, but was unable to continue and finished 19th. ... Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls, Iowa, moved into the runner-up position on the lap-18 restart and finished 0.988 of a second behind Sobbing. ... Bill Leighton Jr. of LaVista, Neb., advanced five positions and finished fourth. ... Todd Cooney of Des Moines, Iowa, gained six spots and finished eighth. ... Brian Kosiski of Omaha, Neb., advanced seven spots and finished ninth. ... The only other caution flew on lap 11 when Chad Holladay was squeezed into the wall at the entrance of turn three, ending his day and relegating him to finish 23rd. ... Sunday's feature, an invitational non-points event co-sanctioned between the Hoker Trucking East Series and Malvern Bank West Series, lasted 25 minutes with 16 competitors completing all 22 laps. … The event was reset for Sunday after Saturday's scheduled Lucas Oil Knoxville Late Model Nationals finale was postponed due to rain.
On the move: Curt Schroeder of Newton, Iowa, started 20th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Sobbing’s Tanner Racing No. 99 is sponsored by Dirt Track Bank, Underdog Design & Drawing and Malvern Bank.
Points chase: Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, leads the Hoker Trucking Series; Jesse Sobbing of Malvern, Iowa, leads the Malvern Bank Series.
