A lone holdout sits in the rain at Tri-County Racetrack on Thursday.
What won the race: Dominating a race halted by rain at the halfway mark, home-track driver David Payne of Murphy, N.C., captured his third Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory Thursday at Tri-County Racetrack, collecting $7,553. Payne finished ahead of runner-up Brandon Overton, whose two-race series win streak came to an end in a 53-lapper halted at the 27-lap mark.
Key notes: Payne previously won on the tour at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, Ga, in 2016 and Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway in 2020. … Payton Freeman held the second spot early with Brandon Overton taking the spot on the 10th lap. ... Rain began falling during a lap-nine caution and picked up during a lap-27 yellow. ... The most significant multicar caution appeared on the ninth lap for series points leader Cory Hedgecock's spin between turns three and four that involved several drivers. ... Three other cautions slowed the race: a called-back initial start; Jensen Ford's lap-nine flat tire; and when Joe Denby got into the guardrail at the top of the frontstretch on lap 28. ... Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., was a no-show at Tri-County, abandoning his pursuit of the Southern Nationals title despite holding the fourth spot in tour points. ... Tucker Anderson, 15, of Toccoa, Ga., made his series debut. ... The tour made its 10th series visit. ... Series and track promoter Ray Cook has recently widened the track surface and made $6,000 in grandstand improvements.
Winner's sponsors: Payne’s Gibson Motorsports Capital Race Car is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Payne Excavating, Interstate Welding, PPM Racing Products, American Racer Tire, Base Racing Fuel and Schaeffer’s Oil.
