What won the race: After trading the lead multiple times, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., took the top spot for good on lap 26 and paced the final 14 circuits, winning Saturday's XR Southern All Star Series feature at I-75 Raceway and earning $5,000.
Quotable: “Man, that was fun! Mack and I had a heckuva battle for the lead. That’s what racing is all about, and thankfully I came out on top,” Hedgecock said. “We missed it a little in qualifying, and as a result had to start sixth. This ol' (Black) Diamond was rollin’ though, and we got to the lead for good a little past the halfway point and sailed on.”
Key notes: The victory is the second of Hedgecock's career, with the XR Southern All Star Racing Series. ... Leading a race-high 22 laps, including the first 11 circuits, fourth-starting Mack McCarter of Gatlinburg, Tenn., settled for the runner-up position, 2.718 seconds behind Hedgecock. ... There were seven total lead changes all between Hedgecock and McCarter, with both drivers leading four separate times. McCarter paced 22 total circuits (lap one through 11, 13-14, 16-22 and lap 25), while Hedgecock led the other 18 laps (12, 15, 23-24 and 26-40). ... Inheriting third position on the lap 18 restart, David Payne of Murphy, N.C., completed the podium. ... Jensen Ford of Johnson City, Tenn., tangled with Robby Moses while running fourth on lap 17 and was unable to continue, relegating him to finish 16th. Moses of Maryville, Tenn., rebounded from the incident and finished eighth. ... Polesitter Eli Beets of Knoxville, Tenn., faded in the opening laps and retired after lap seven, relegating him to finish 19th. ... Front-row starter David Crabtree of Maryville, Tenn., bicycled in turn one and brought out the first caution on lap one. Crabtree returned to complete only five laps and finished 22nd. ... Saturday's feature, the fifth of 23 races this season for the XR Southern All Star Series, was slowed by six cautions and lasted 42 minutes, with 12 competitors completing all 40 laps.
On the move: John Ownbey of Cleveland, Tenn., started 16th and finished sixth.
