What won the race: A high-flying Josh Rice snagged his second career Valvoline Iron-Man Southern Series victory in Saturday's Lake Cumberland Classic. The Verona, Ky., driver cruised to the checkers ahead of Michael Chilton and Tristan Chamberlain to pocket $5,000 in the 26th annual Lake Cumberland Classic, his first-ever victory at the 3/8-mile oval.
Quotable: “We had a hot rod tonight,” Rice said. “We pretty much went (with the same setup) as last time here. I knew we were pretty good and it worked out. It was a lot of fun. We’ve only been here twice so it’s cool to add Lake Cumberland to the (career) win list."
Key notes: Rice posted his fifth victory of the season paying at least $5,000. ... Runner-up Michael Chilton was five lengths behind at the finish. ... Chilton had a supporter stop him tonight and hand him a $1,000 check. ... Third-place Tristan Chamberlan matched his first finish of the season. ... Tommy Bailey led early from outside the front row, but he fell out with mechanical problems after several early cautions. ... Bailey held a three-thousandths of a second lead on Chilton on the first lap with Rice running third. ... Rice overtook Chilton an an ensuing restart and inherited the lead upon Bailey's departure. ... A six-car pileup in turn two drew the first slowdown on the second lap. ... Devin Gilpin and Kenny Cobble scratched from the feature lineup. ... Josh Putnam, who crashed into the inside turn-three wall on the fourth lap, was disqualified because he "got out of his car then grabbed a track official,” according to series director Chris Tilley. Putnam would've been ninth in the finishing order. … Christian Hanger’s quick time came in his track debut. … Cameron Marlar won the Crate Late Model feature.
Winner's sponsors: Rice’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Sunesis Construction, Rice Brothers Racing, Extreme Sportswear, Brucebilt Performance, Integra and Valvoline.
Points chase: Before Lake Cumberland, Dustin Nobbe of Batesville, Ind., led the Northern Series; Jensen Ford of Johnson City, Tenn., leads the Southern Series.
