Max Blair picked up $3,000 for his ULMS victory in Bloomsburg, Pa.
What won the race: Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., quickly found the quick route around Bloomsburg Fair Speedway, dominating all 30 laps of Sunday night's Zimmer's United Late Model Series South Region feature at the brand-new 3/8-mile oval. The three-time ULMS champion was never challenged en route to beating Dylan Yoder to the finish line by 2.006 seconds for the $3,000 top prize.
Quotable: “This place is a little more in our wheelhouse compared to the stuff we normally come down this way and race on,” Blair said, contrasting Bloomsburg’s 3/8-mile layout to the half-mile ovals prevalent in central Pennsylvania. “We got here today and my dad’s like, ‘This is how they ought to build all them fairgrounds — take the big racetrack and put a little one inside it.’”
Key notes: Blair recorded his fifth ULMS triumph of 2021; he has two North wins and three South checkered flags. ... The fifth-starting Yoder came on late, grabbing second on lap 26 from Jeff Rine, who settled for third after holding the runner-up spot for the first 25 circuits. ... Teenager Deshawn Gingerich tallied a career-best ULMS finish of fourth. ... The race's only caution flag flew moments after the original start with Jim Bernheisel hit the turn-one wall. ... Officials rushed the feature to the track after the USAC sprint car A-main concluded because lightning was dancing in the sky as a thunderstorm approached. Only a few drops of rain fell, though, as the storm just missed the track. ... Rine's fast time of 15.786 seconds in qualifying established the initial Late Model record for the track, which saw its first action after being constructed over the past several months on the inside of the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds' half-mile oval that last hosted an auto race in 1987.
On the move: Shaun Lawton of Bloomsburg, Pa., started 15th and finished fifth at his hometown track.
