David Payne of Murphy, N.C., grabbed a $4,053 victory at his home track.
What won the race: Polesitter, David Payne of Murphy, N.C., utilized lapped traffic to take the lead on the 18th lap and paced the final 22 circuits, earning his first career Schaeffer's Spring Nationals feature victory at Tri-County Racetrack on Friday night, collecting $4,053.
Quotable: "This is a racy place and Ray Cook does a great job with it. There at the end, I could start to feel my car going away a little bit, so I started trying to move around, searching a little bit and I felt him a time or two, but I appreciate (Cory Hedgecock) racing me clean," Payne said, adding that he "kept watching what those lapped cars were doing, they were racing, too you know, they didn't do anything wrong."
Key notes: Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., led the first 17 laps, before getting slowed by lapped traffic and losing the lead to Payne. ... Both drivers exchanged slide jobs and cross-over moves for the lead on laps 30 and 31, with Payne prevailing both times. ... Hedgecock settled for the runner-up position, crossing the finish line 0.290 seconds behind Payne. ... Previous Schaeffer's Spring Nationals tour winner this year, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., finished third. ... 2019 Tri-County event winner, Donald McIntosh of Atlanta, Ga., finished fifth. ... Ashton Winger of Senoia, Ga., slowed with an apparent mechanical issue and pulled into the infield on lap 24, relegating him to finish 11th. ... The 40-lap feature was slowed by two caution flags and lasted just over 16 minutes. ... The tour continues at Mountain View Raceway on Saturday, with a $5,053-to-win main event. ... Payne joins McDowell and Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., as series winners this season.
On the move: Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., started ninth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Payne’s Gibson Motorsports Capital Race Car is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine and sponsored by Payne Excavating, Interstate Welding, PPM Racing Products, American Racer Tire, Base Racing Fuel and Schaeffer’s Oil.
