Rusty Schlenk steers toward a $5,000 Southern All Stars victory March 13 at Southern Raceway.
What won the race: Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, led all 50 laps Saturday at Southern Raceway for a $5,000 victory and his first career Southern All Star Series victory. Schlenk took the checkers ahead of Friday's $3,000 winner G.R. Smith.
Quotable: "I'm glad we made the trip. It's definitely a different racetrack. Man, it took me all Thursday and all Friday to get it figured out, but I think we nailed it tonight," Schlenk said. "I was a little too tight. I wasn't expecting it to rubber up that quick. But we held on there. I saved a little bit for the last five laps and thank god we had a caution there and got rid of that lapped traffic. It all worked out in our favor."
Key notes: Nine of 20 starters completed 50 laps. ... Several cautions slowed the action, including for a first-lap pileup in turn one and a lap-seven tangle among Leon Henderson, Mark Dodson and Dean Carpenter. ... The Southern All Stars are scheduled to return to Southern Raceway on Nov. 12-13.
On the move: Christian Hanger of Winchester, Tenn., started ninth and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Schlenk’s Domination Race Car is powered by a Mullins Engine and sponsored by Buckeye Concrete Coatings, Tom Finch Automotive, Dominator Race Products, Velocita USA, Landrum Performance Springs, VP Racing Fuel, Vahlco Racing Wheels, Wilwood and CP-Carrillo, Bilstein, ML Performance, Allstar Performance.
Points chase: After Saturday: 1. Payton Freeman (266); 2. Billy Franklin (232); 3. Austin Franklin (214); 4. Mark Dodson (198); 5. G. R. Smith (196).
