Mark Whitener celebrates Friday's Crate Racin' USA victory at East Bay Raceway Park.
What won the race: Overtaking race-long leader Kyle Lukon on the 26th lap, sixth-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., made an outside move Friday at East Bay Raceway Park to earn his second straight Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout victory. Whitener added another $2,500 to his weekend earnings in taking the checkers 1.598 seconds ahead of Lukon, who started outside the front row.
Quotable: “(Lukon), he's real good, he's had a real fast race car both nights," Whitener ssaid. "He just got hung up behind lapped traffic right where I wanted him. I just fell to the outside and got ‘em."
Key notes: Whitener, who lapped all but 12 cars in the caution-free 30-lapper, made the winning pass entering turn three and left Lukon with the runner-up finish for the second night in a row. ... Whitener had planned on competing in Super Late Model action at North Florida Speedway, but with that Valvoline Iron-Man Racing Series action rained out, took his Crate to East Bay. ... Whitener was nursing a bruised left leg after he stepped into the gap between the front of his trailer's liftgate and the truck while loading up for East Bay. ... Saturday's weekend finale pays $5,000-to-win. ... The weekend’s Crate Racin’ USA Winter Series events stream live on FloRacing.
Winner's sponsors: Whitener’s Barry Wright Race Car is sponsored by Carter Trucking & Logging, P&S Transportation, Mosley Ranch Timber, Michael Moore Construction & Roofing, Edwards Jones Investments, Baker Farms, ML Motorsports, Ocala Restaurant Supply and Massey Towing & Recovery.
