What won the race: Earning his second special event victory in as many weekends, Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., held off a late bid by Devin Gilpin at Moler Raceway Park for a $5,000 Super Late Model victory in the track’s delayed 40-lap season opener.
Quotable: “I seen my lead (edge) getting closer and closer,” the 21-year-old Rice said. “Man, I don’t what it was … I got where I couldn’t catch those (lapped) guys. I don’t know if I had a tire go away or what … it’s awesome to finally get us a 5-grand (win) here at Moler. We’ve tried to many times, and just something stupid (happened) every time.”
Key notes: Rice, who earned a $4,000 Schaeffer's Iron-Man Late Model Series victory on June 5 at Wartburg (Tenn.) Speedway, led the entire distance but had Gilpin on his rear bumper at the finish line. .... Rice was especially pleased to win for the first time with his car owner, Rick Jones, in attendance. ... Rice's older brother, James, finished eighth. ... Moler’s Wedding Reception for Jenna and Andrew included a $5,000-to-win Super Late Model special as the "entertainment" with racing for modifieds, sport mods and compacts. …
On the move: Debuting a new Longhorn Race Car, Zack Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., started 11th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Rice’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Jay Dickens engine and sponsored by Sunesis Construction, Rice Brothers Racing, Extreme Sportswear, Brucebilt Performance, Integra and Valvoline.
Points chase: John Whitney is the reigning track champion.
