Ross Bailes visits victory lane after his $5,000 Cherokee victory.
What won the race: Leading every lap from outside the front row, Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., won Sunday's Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series event at Cherokee Speedway. Bailes earned $5,000, winning over polesitter Casey Roberts.
Quotable: “I had a soft tire on. I don’t know what everybody else had on, so I was just trying to ride and make sure I was there at the end,” Bailes said. “Casey (Roberts) did a good job and the lapped cars did a good job too. We had a good car ever since we unloaded.”
Key notes: The 40-lap race was slowed by one caution, a left-rear flat on Payton Freeman’s machine on lap 31. … Ross Bailes lowered the track record in time trials (Chris Ferguson held the previous mark at 14.654). ... Fourth-place finisher Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., won the series opener at Cherokee back in November. Madden also won at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. … Fifth-place Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., won at Lavonia (Ga.) Speedway on Dec. 15. … Saturday’s series race in Cochran, Ga., was rained out and won't be rescheduled. … Austin Mintz of Hopkins, S.C., won the 602 Crate Late Model feature.
Winner's sponsors: Bailes drove a Ronnie McCarter-owned Rocket Chassis with sponsorship from Felony Farms, Bailes Construction, Viper Motorsports, ML Performance and STI Transport.
Points chase: Heading to Cherokee, Chris Madden has 42 points to lead Trent Ivey (27), Kyle Strickler (26), Logan Roberson (25) and Zack Mitchell (25).
