What won the race: Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., overtook polesitter Tyler Wood on lap 24 and held off 10th-starting Wil Herrington to win Friday’s Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series King of Crate 100 opener at North Alabama Speedway. Knowles earned $2,000 for his fifth DLCS win of the season.
Quotable: “This race track was race friendly tonight, just like it is every time we come here,” Knowles said. “I could run just about anywhere I wanted to and I think we learned some things tonight that will help us (Saturday) night. We’ve got a good string of wins and a second-place thrown in there at this track, which is one of my favorite places to race.”
Key notes: Knowles and Wood exchanged slide jobs on lap 22, but Wood stayed out front at the line. … Knowles took the lead officially on lap 24 as he charged ahead exiting turn four. … The race was slowed by four cautions. … The most serious accident occurred on a lap-39 restart when Brock Hall of Ethridge, Tenn., sailed off the outside of the track in turn one, hitting a pack car and a tree before his race car came to a stop. Hall exited his car under his own power and walked to the ambulance for evaluation. According to series officials, he was released with no injuries. … The third annual King of Crate 100 continues Saturday with a 60-lap, $5,000-to-win feature.
On the move: Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., started 15th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Knowles drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Knowles Race Parts & Bodies, Josh Roberts Trucking, Buster Goss Body Shop, Martins Wrecker Service, Curbow Logging, Coosa Heating & Cooling and JW Motorsports.
Points chase: Entering the event, Jake Knowles (1,124 points) of Rome, Ga., led Cruz Skinner (1,070), Wil Herrington (986), Oakley Johns (970) and Tyler Wood (950).
