Bobby Pierce waves the checkers in victory lane at Tri-City.
What won the race: Sixth-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., overtook Brian Shirley on the 15th lap Thursday at Tri-City Speedway and captured the Late Model portion of Summit Mod Mania. Pierce earned $3,000 in the 30-lapper on first of three nights of action at the 3/8-mile oval.
Quotable: "That battle with Shirley there, I didn't know if I was going to get him. ... he got stuck behind a lapped car there," Pierce said.
Key notes: Pierce, who lapped all but six competitors, won the eighth of the last 13 Late Model feature at Mod Mania. ... Pierce made a nifty move in turn one to work around the outside of Brian Shirley amid traffic. ... Polesitter Gordy Gundaker led the first three laps and finished third. ... Track champ Michael Kloos was running among the top five early when he pounded the turn-four wall to draw the event's lone caution. ... The Late Models are on the undercard of Sept. 26-28's 15th annual Summit Racing Modified Mania Dirt Nationals.
On the move: Payton Looney of Republic, Mo., started 12th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce's No. 32 has a Pro Power Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Premier Waste Services, Viper Motorsports, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing, Berger’s Marina, Digital Copy Systems, First Spear, Quality Paint & Body and Advanced Suspension.
