What won the race: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., slipped by his brother David to lead lap 32 and went on to win Saturday’s caution-plagued Firecracker 4000 at Volusia Speedway Park, earning $4,000 for his second Firecracker 4000 victory in a row.
Key notes: Mark Whitener finished 1.117 seconds ahead of his brother David Whitener, who took the lead from Nevin Gainey on lap 10 and paced the middle stage of the race. … Gainey retired on lap 11. … Fifteen of the 26 starters completed all 40 laps. … The race took more than 59 minutes to complete. It was slowed by multiple cautions including a lengthy yellow on lap five and three cautions in the final eight laps. … The final caution set up a four-lap shootout to the checkers. … The Firecracker 4000 was originally set for July 5, but rained out. ... The race was unsactioned, but ran under Florida Late Model Challenge Series rules. ... Volusia hosts the Florida Late Model Challenge Series on Nov. 23.
