Carson Ferguson in victory lane at Virginia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: After suffering a flat tire early in the race, Carson Ferguson of Charlotte, N.C., rallied from the tail of the field to take the lead when Layton Sullivan blew a right-rear tire heading to the checkered flag and grab a $3,000 victory in Saturday's caution-filled 40-lap Fastrak touring feature at Virginia Motor Speedway. It was Ferguson's third straight triumph on the Crate tour.
Quotable: “I really hate that for Layton,” Ferguson said. “I saw his tire was going down there the last couple laps … I was really wanting to get up there and race with him and I really had nothing for him even with him with that bald tire. The last lap when you’re in second you’re always praying that something’s gonna happen to the leader, and something happened. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.”
Key notes: Ferguson's cousin, Chris Ferguson, finished fifth in the evening's 60-lap Ultimate Southeast Super Late Model Series feature. ... Jensen Ford led laps 1-19 before slowing to bring out a caution. ... Justin Williams inherited the top spot from Ford but was doomed by a blown right-rear tire on lap 34. ... Trever Feathers briefly paced the field on lap 35 before a flat right-rear tire forced him pitside. He recovered to finish second. ... With the misfortune of Feathers, Sullivan moved in front but settled for third after his flat. ... After a multicar lap-26 tangle drew a red flag, the race was slowed five more times by cautions before another lap was completed. ... VMS hosts Fastrak's $50,000-to-win Fastrak World Championship on Sept. 13-14.
On the move: Winner Carson Ferguson started 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Ferguson’s Rocket Chassis is sponsored by The Racing Warehouse, Hoopaugh Grading Company, PFC Brakes, Beaux-Tie Limousine, Pro Fabrication and Star Graphix.
