What won the race: Travis Pennington of Stapleton, Ga., streaked to a $3,000 victory in Sunday's 50-lap National Late Model Super Car Series Memorial Day Shootout at Cochran Motor Speedway. The reigning tour champion assumed command on a lap-13 restart when race-long pacesetter Dalton Cook faltered and went on to beat a rallying Cook by 0.730 of a second.

His previous score came April 27 at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, Ala. ... Cook controlled the race's first 13 circuits, but he found himself in a big hole after experiencing trouble on the restart. He fell as far back as seventh before coming on strong during the late stages to salvage a runner-up finish. ... The NLMSCS was back in action following a month-long hiatus. … The series kicked off the weekend Saturday at East Alabama.
Winner's sponsors: Pennington's Longhorn Chassis has sponsorship from U.S. Duffie Site Prep and Starrette Trucking.
Points chase: Joseph Brown of Columbus, Ga., held the tour’s early points lead.
