Cruz Skinner holds the checkered flag after his first-ever Durrence Layne Chevrolet victory Saturday at Body's Speedway.
What won the race: Cruz Skinner of Oxford, Ala., drove to his first career Durrence Lane Chevrolet Series victory, topping Hall of Famer Ronnie Johnson for a $2,500 win Saturday at Boyd's Speedway.
Quotable: “To win my first Durrence Layne Chevrolet Late Model race in front of Ronnie (Johnson) and Cory (Hedgecock), with all of their wins and championships, just hasn’t fully sunk in yet,” winner Cruz Skinner said. “Ronnie Johnson is my hero and my mentor. He has been so great in helping me ever since I started racing Late Models five years ago. I don’t know if I’d be standing here tonight if it wasn’t for Ronnie.”
Key notes: Skinner finished 2.571 seconds ahead of Johnson. … Nineteen drivers finished the race with 12 completing all 50 laps. … The tour’s only stop at Boyd’s this season was originally the first of a holiday tripleheader, but Sunday’s stop at Cochran (Ga.) Motor Speedway was rained out, leaving only the July 3 race at Talladega (Ala.) Short Track remaining. … Cory Hedgecock’s third-place finish is his fifth top-five in seven series races. … Polesitter Heath Hindman finished 21st. … Skinner is the sixth different winner in seven events.
Winner's sponsors: Skinner drives a Rockets Chassis and is sponsored by Skinner Body Shop, NAPA Auto Parts, Huddle House and Keyser Manufacturing.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Cory Hedgecock (562) led Ashton Winger (538) and Jake Knowles (472).
