Tyler Carpenter survived some scary moments at Lake Cumberland.
What won the race: Polesitter Tyler Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., led all 31 laps of the Johnny Wheeler Memorial at Lake Cumberland Speedway, surviving Jason Jameson's late pass amid traffic to collect $4,031. The race was co-sanctioned by two Schaeffer's sponsored tours, the Southern National Bonus Series and Iron-Man Championship Series.
Quotable: "We caught them lapped cars. I was just trying to time it and ride it out, but I knew with guys like (Jason) Jameson and (Michael) Chilton and all them guys, (Aaron) Ridley, you can't ride around too long," winner Tyler Carpenter said. "You gotta get after it. So I just tried to power my way through (traffic)."
Key notes: When Tyler Carpenter had to check up for a lapped car exiting turn two, Jason Jameson slipped by on the backstretch with six laps remaining. But Jameson spun exiting turn four after making contact with the same slower car that hampered Carpenter. ... Michael Chilton finished fourth despite hitting the turn-two wall in the first half of the race. ... Front-row starter Jeff Watson was the first retiree. ... All but four drivers completed 31 laps. ... Carpenter recorded his second victory with each tour; all of his wins have come at Kentucky tracks. ... The race honored late driver Johnny Wheeler, 54, of Campbellsville, Ky., who died last month after suffering a heart attack.
On the move: Caleb Ashby of Cunningham, Tenn., started 12th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Carpenter’s Kryptonite Race Car is sponsored by Mike’s Tree Service, Octane Race Products, JRi Shocks and Hoosier by Frye.
Points chase: Entering the event David Payne (738) of Murphy, N.C., led Aaron Ridley (732) and Chicky Barton (724) in SNBS points; Craig Greer led Iron-Man points.
