Mark Whitener takes the checkered flag at Oglethorpe.
What won the race: Surviving a slowly deflating right front tire late in the race, polesitter Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., held off Cla Knight of North Augusta, S.C., to win the weekend finale at Oglethorpe Raceway Park. Travis Pennington of Stapleton, Ga., finished third in a race that was trimmed to 40 laps from its original 50. Whitener collected $3,000 for the win.
Quotable: “It was kinda our race to lose on the start,” said race winner Mark Whitener. “We was able to get the point and never looked back. I had a 70 (compound tire) on the right rear. It was a hard tire and it took a little bit to get going (on restarts) and I was a little tight through the middle and off. So I was just having to dip it down in the moisture to get it to turn. Once I could get my momentum and get going, I could start moving on pretty good. Those last 10 laps I had a right front flat tire. I could feel (the car) bottoming out getting into the corner."
Key notes: It was the second race of a doubleheader at Oglethorpe on Saturday following a rainout of Friday’s $2,000-to-win event. ... Cla Knight earned $1,000 from Sunoco Race Fuels/Knowles Race Parts for setting the fast time. ... There have been seven different winners in 12 races. ... Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., is the only repeat winner. He has won six of 12 series events this season. ... Whitener, Garrett Shurling, Greg Fore, Jesse Lowe, Lyle Bronson and Jake Knowles each have one win.
