Daryl Charlier on his way to a heat win during Friday night's RUSH Crate Late Model action at PPMS.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when John Waters hit the wall on lap three, Daryl Charlier of Midway, Pa., turned back a mid-race challenge from Russ King before holding off a charging Max Blair in the waning laps to win the RUSH-sanctioned Bill Hendren Memorial at PPMS. Blair of Centerville, Pa., settled for second, while Charlier collected a career-high $2,500 for his first-ever RUSH series victory.
Quotable: "I was surprised (King) was having such a good run," said Charlier. "He was on the inside and I didn't know if I should go high or low especially in (turns) three and four. I know I'm always good up high in (turns) one and two, but I just stuck to the high side. I don't know what happened on the backstretch with him and Justin Lamb, but I got rooted pretty good in the left rear and luckily everything stayed up."
Key notes: Charlier finished 1.916 seconds ahead of Blair. ... The victory for Charlier was his second straight at Pittsburgh and fifth of the season. ... Waters, who was tied for the point lead with Bryce Davis entering the event, grabbed the lead at the start from the outside front row, but he got into the wall hard on lap three will leading and finished 25th. … Charlier and King raced side-by-side for the lead on laps 25-27. … While racing for the lead, King made contact with the lapped car of Justin Lamb on lap 27, ending the night for both drivers. … Max Blair was subbing for Mike Pegher, Jr. in Brian Swank's No. RJ1. … Charlier became the eighth different series winner of the season and 29th all-time. … Jamie Wrightsman captured the non-qualifier’s race. … The Bill Hendren Memorial will return for the 30th annual Pittsburgher on Oct. 5-6, 2018. ... The race is held in honor of the late engine builder, who passed away March 9, 2011. … The Hendren family has posted an additional $3,000 in cash bonuses that will be awarded over the 30-lap feature.
On the move: Max Blair started 14th to finish runner-up.
Winner's sponsors: Charlier’s No. 12 is sponsored by Tri-State Motorsports, Bud’s, Kane's Ideal Truck Service, NAPA Auto Parts, McDonald Auto Supply, Knuckleheads Pizza, and Donaldson Supply Company.
