Donald McIntosh takes the checkers for his $5,000 victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., took the lead on lap eight after Chris Ferguson retired the event, then outran fourth-starting Ricky Weiss of Headingly, Manitoba, for the $5,000 victory in the Big Daddy 500 at Smoky Mountain Speedway. McIntosh repeated his April 2 Ultimate victory at the 4/10-mile oval.
Quotable: "I hate it for Ferguson that he fell out. Man, we had a great car tonight," McIntosh said, thanking his Blount Motorsports team and sponsors. "(Clean air) made a real big difference. Even getting in lapped traffic, I was having trouble maneuvering the car, because the aero means that much on a track this big."
Key notes: Canadian runner-up Ricky Weiss piloted a Vic Hill entry for the second time. ... Chris Ferguson led the first seven laps before pulling off when the carburetor stud lost the air filter. ... Skip Arp was running third before dropping out with two laps to go. ... The feature was slowed by three cautions; after a lap-13 yellow for debris, a Roger Best spin brought out a lap-15 caution. ... On the ensuing restart, Ricky Weiss and Ray Cook were briefly connected on the backstretch battling for second and Cook's Stacy Boles-owned car ended up in the wall as he collected Mark Douglas, Ross Bailes and several other cars that littered the track toward the turn-three entrance. ... The race was co-sanctioned by the Ultimate Battle of the Bluegrass Series.
On the move: Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., started ninth and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: McIntosh drives a Blount Motorsports Rocket Chassis with a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsorship from Stowers (CAT) Machinery Corp., Arnold Trucking, Blount Excavating, Cherokee Millwright, Food City, GEO Services, Insurance Partners, Massey Electric, Tennessee RV, Turner Hydraulics, VP Race Fuels and Wine and Spirits Cellar.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Kenny Collins of Colbert, Ga., had 187 points to lead the Ultimate Series over Dennis Franklin (179) and Chris Ferguson (135).
