Shane Clanton works the low groove en route to victory.
What won the race: Seventh-starting Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., overtook outside front-row starter Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Ga., with 10 laps remaining at Senoia Raceway to capture the Southern All Star event honoring his father. Clanton earned $5,025 in the second annual Billy Clanton Classic while Chase Junghans and Hickman finished second and third.
Quotable: "The cautions helped us tremendously. We had a good race car all night long, but just messed up qualifying there a little bit," said Clanton, who got into contention after a mid-race restart. "We just got our gameplan together there to bide our time. The cautions fell at the right time ... man, what a racetrack. I've said it before: this is the best racetrack in the country now."
Key notes: Clanton notched his 15th career series victory and his second straight Billy Clanton Classic, using a crossover move down the frontstretch to take command on lap 41. ... Clanton came to the front despite bending the right-front A-frame after contact with Frank Heckenast Jr., who finished fifth. ... Runner-up Chase Junghans is Clanton's de facto teammate and finished 0.800 seconds back in second after taking the runner-up spot from Riley Hickman with five laps remaining. ... Frank Heckenast Jr. drove a Clanton backup car with his No. 99jr doorpanels. ... Clint Smith led the 15th lap but slipped back to finish ninth. ... Polesitter Mason Massey faded to finish 12th. ... Sixteen drivers completed 50 laps and 17 were running at the finish.
On the move: Clanton rallied from seventh to record his fifth victory of 2016.
Winner's sponsors: Clanton's Capital Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and is sponsored by Weldbank Energy, The Butcher Shop, Advocare, Super K Express, Keyser Manufacturing, Braille Battery, VP Race Fuels, and Hoosier Racing Tire.
Points chase: Three-time and reigning champ Riley Hickman broke a tie with Brad Skinner to move into the series points lead.
