Shane Clanton heads to victory in the Billy Clanton Memorial.
What won the race: A fitting winner, Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., captured Saturday's rain-shortened Billy Clanton Memorial, a tribute to his late father at Senoia Raceway. Clanton earned $4,025 in the Southern Nationals Bonus Series event that drew 17 cars and ended after 34 of 40 scheduled laps when rain prevented the race from continuing.
Quotable: “We’ve had a tremendous year so far, and we’ve won some big races, but this one right here is the most special,” Clanton said in victory lane. “To win the race that carries my dad’s name is really something, and it’s a victory that I wanted really badly.”
Key notes: The 40-lapper began about 9:30 p.m. just as sprinkles began. ... Clanton was the only driver under the 14-second mark in time trials. ... The race paid tribute to late Georgia racer Billy Clanton and the extra $25 atop the purse represented Clanton's No. 25. ... Because of the rain, Senoia's Limited Late Model and Crate Late Model divisions will run double features July 11.
Winner's sponsors: Clanton's Ron Davies-owned Capital Race Car is powered by a Clements engine and carries sponsorship from Weldbank Energy, Penn Gold, Hornburg Oil, Advocare, Hoosier, G.W. Performance and Keyser Manufacturing.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Randy Weaver of Crossville, Tenn., led the Ray Cook-promoted tour's points.
