Jeff Smith celebrates Saturday's feature victory at Talladega.
What won the race: Getting bailed out after a complete restart following an opening-lap spin, polesitter Jeff Smith of Chatsworth, Ga., kept Sam Seawright and Deisel Jones at bay in leading all 59 laps of Saturday's sixth annual Red Farmer Tribute at Talladega Short Track. Smith beat Seawright by 1.095 seconds for his second career Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA 604 Series victory and first in more than 12 years.
Quotable: "I gotta update my list cause I’ve won a handful of these things, but never won with that many numbers in the (winner’s) check," Smith said before later adding, "I thought I done stepped on it that first start. Sam (Seawright) swung out there really wide, I thought 'He's not coming back,' so I rolled under him and here he come. He did nothing wrong, I just filled a hole and man, thankfully I didn't take out half the field or knock a bumper down when I hit that (infield) tire."
Key notes: Smith initially spun in turn three on the opening lap after contact while battling side-by-side with Sam Seawright, collecting third-running Deisel Jones; however, since multiple cars were involved, a complete restart was called, allowing Smith and Jones to retain their original starting positions. ... Smith secured his second win of the season, adding to an April 4 victory in local 604 Crates at his home track of North Georgia Speedway. ... It's the most lucrative payday of his career and first CRUSA 604 Series win since July 3, 2014, also at Talladega. ... Seawright, the two-time and reigning Ice Bowl winner at TST, never seriously challenged Smith and briefly relinquished second to Jones on a lap-33 restart before retaking the runner-up spot on a lap-47 restart. ... Jones settled for third with minor nose damage after the opening-lap dustup with Smith. ... Koulten Herbert survived a lap-22 spin and finished fourth after his team changed engines following Friday's prelim. ... Hayden Cardwell climbed five positions to place sixth. ... Points leader Joseph Brown rallied to finish ninth after utilizing a series provisional. ... Greg Martin ran as high as fourth in the early going before fading to 13th. ... Being ran in conjunction with NASCAR's fall weekend at nearby Talladega Superspeedway, the race paid tribute to 94-year-old Red Farmer, a NASCAR Hall of Famer and regular competitor in Talladega’s 602 Crate Late Model Sportsman division. Farmer was voted as one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers in 1998 and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2022 after competing during the sport’s early years. ... The 59-lap feature was slowed five times, most notably on lap 22 when Koulten Herbert and Michael Page made contact as they battled for sixth on the 22nd lap; Page, winner of Friday's $5,038 prelim, appeared to make contact with Herbert at the entrance of turn one, sending Herbert spinning. CRUSA officials pinned the caution on Page, sending him to the rear of the field; Page completed only 10 more laps before calling it a night. ... Josh Ray slammed the turn-two wall on lap 33 for the fourth stoppage. ... Jake Knowles slowed from 11th and retired for the final yellow flag on lap 47. ... Eighteen starters completed 59 laps in the 34-minute feature.
On the move: Joseph Brown of Columbus, Ga., started 23rd and finished ninth.
