Brett Swedberg takes the checkers in Saturday's Fall Classic at Wilmot.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead when frontrunners Turk Letizia and Taylor Scheffler retired in succession on lap 22 and an ensuing restart attempt, third-starting Brett Swedberg held off Nick Anvelink over the final nine laps to win Saturday's Fall Classic finale at Wilmot Raceway. Swedberg beat Anvelink by 0.522 of a second for the $3,300 paycheck, his third Wabam Dirt Kings Tour victory of the season and seventh of his career.
Key notes: Swedberg led the final nine laps for his fifth feature win of the season. ... His other two Dirt Kings Tour wins came May 31 at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wis., and Aug. 14 at Outagamie Speedway in Seymour, Wis. ... Points leader Nick Anvelink overcame transmission issues that sidelined him in his heat race and climbed to second on a lap-22 restart, but never seriously threatened Swedberg in the closing laps. ... Second-running Turk Letizia fought off Swedberg in the early going until slowing with apparent engine failure for the race's second caution on lap 22. ... Race-long leader Taylor Scheffler slowed on the ensuing restart and retired, giving control to Swedberg. ... Two other yellow flags flew, first on lap 10 for Shawn Miller's solo spin; Miller continued and finished eighth as the final starter to complete 30 laps in the 17-minute feature. ... Bill Rezutek slowed on lap 24 and retired for the race's final stoppage. ... It was the first Dirt Kings event at Wilmot in four years. ... The winner's purse was increased $300 courtesy of CK Contractors.
On the move: Runner-up Nick Anvelink of Bonduel, Wis., started 10th.
